Gas supply crisis has worsened in Karachi, as Pakistan’s Minister of State for Petroleum, Musadik Malik, announced that the government cannot provide 24×7 gas supply, The News International reported. Load-shedding has become a daily occurrence amid an economic crisis and reserves have dropped, forcing the gas load-shedding to continue during sehri and iftar.
Malik has promised to visit Karachi to resolve the gas supply issue faced by people. He also mentioned that gas bills have been separated for the rich and poor, with the rich being required to pay more now.
Last week, the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) announced the suspension of gas supplies to power plants and industries due to low supply of gas. The volume of gas in pipelines had decreased due to the reduction in supply, prompting the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) to call for immediate government action over the shortage of gas supply in Karachi. KCCI has stated that industries cannot function without gas and would be forced to halt production.
KCCI President, Muhammad Tariq Yousuf, has stated that it is highly unfair to have such an attitude towards Karachi’s business community, which contributes around 54 per cent in terms of exports and more than 68 per cent in terms of revenue despite facing many odds and challenges. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed officials to ensure an uninterrupted supply of gas, and has promised that the process will be supervised with no negligence tolerated.
