Wikipedia Services Degraded in Pakistan Over Blasphemy Content

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has degraded Wikipedia services in the country due to alleged blasphemy content on the platform.

The PTA has given a 48-hour ultimatum to remove the content, warning that if it fails to comply, Wikipedia will be blocked in Pakistan.

The PTA issued a notice to Wikipedia under applicable law and court order but the platform did not comply or appear before the authority.

The move comes as Pakistan tightens its strict anti-blasphemy laws, which carry the death penalty for anyone found guilty of insulting Islam or the Prophet Muhammad.

The country is also facing a major economic crisis, with food and power shortages, inflation, and a collapsing currency.

Blasphemy is a sensitive issue in Pakistan and authorities have previously taken action against social media platforms for broadcasting such content.

The situation is expected to impact those who rely on Wikipedia for education and information purposes.
